Hiking Time Calculator
Naismith's Rule is a time-honored method for estimating hiking duration, developed by Scottish mountaineer William Naismith in 1892. The rule provides a simple baseline: allow one hour for every 5 kilometers (3 miles) of distance on flat terrain, plus an additional hour for every 600 meters (2,000 feet) of elevation gain. This calculator uses a modern adaptation where we estimate 4 kilometers per hour on flat ground. Keep in mind that your actual hiking time will vary based on fitness level, pack weight, trail conditions, weather, and group dynamics. Naismith's Rule works best for day hikes on established trails and should be adjusted for rough terrain, heavy loads, or challenging weather conditions.
